"The Glass Menagerie"

When I saw the theme for today all I could think of is a little glass unicorn, Tennessee Williams and 'Tom Wingfield'. The Glass Menagerie is and always will be one of my favorite theater plays. I believe that its beauty comes from the way T.W portrayed his characters. They are 'made' of glass...

Glass is a controversial material in my opinion. It looks so delicate and easy to break and at the same time it can last (forever would be an overstatement), it has the 'ability' to harm and has got hidden strength. People can be like that, don't you think?

Tom is the character that I could relate to. His eagerness to get away from the small alley in St. Louis. To see the world and escape from, what he feels to be, his prison. Instead of reaching for the stars, he dreams of unknown worlds and 'travels' through the eyes of a camera...through the movies.

"I didn't go to the moon but much further-because time is the longest space dividing two places..." he says "I left Saint Louis..." (from 'The Glass Menagerie' by Tennessee Williams--my translation from the Greek version).

Happy Theme Thursday everyone
Take care
xoxo

Very Nice posting, Marianna. I'd not know Tennessee Williams was this well know, overseas! And I like your second paragraph, here. It's a good comparison.

Do you know, I've never read that? I will have to.

And I love that you call glass a "controversial material." That is brilliant.

wonderful contribution to the theme - I love the analogy between glass and people....

it has been a very long time since I saw a production of the glass menagerie, I know there is film adaption I'm heading to the library, I'll have to see if there's a copy there.... if memory serves me correctly I think john malkovich plays the role of tom....

I remember seeing that as a kid. There was a gentleman caller(a friend of her brother) who called her Blueroses. He broke the horn of the little unicorn and she had to make do with a pony instead.

Then he took her dancing.

It is one of my favorite plays also. So thought provoking. Nice tribute and love the unicorn. I have many animals of glass but not a uni.

Beautiful unicorn picture, I like the one about traveling farther than the moon. Never thougt of that one before, even though I have seen the movie. Maybe when it is in writing you see things better.

Great post, great thoughts.

Thank you.

I love Tennesee Williams. Being from the south I always pretend I'm a character from one of his plays sauntering around in the heat and sipping iced tea. Perhaps I'm Maggie the Cat or Blanche Du Bois. Great post, I enjoyed it.

It's been years since I read 'the Glass Menagerie'. Now I think I'll read it again.

Years ago I read his memoir, I was a kid and probably a lot of the stuff shocked me, or I misunderstood. I saw it again in a local used book shop but didn't buy it and now I wonder is it still there? I'll check today.
